Richie Wellens speaks on Orient’s defeat to Barnsley…

Hear from Orient Head Coach Richie Wellens after the O’s were defeated late on at Oakwell Stadium.

Orient went ahead in the first half through Ruel Sotiriou, but two late goals from Adam Phillips meant that the points went to the South Yorkshire side.

With a late double, Adam Phillips gives 10-man Barnsley FC the victory, and Neill Collins calls it a “pivotal moment.”
With two thrilling goals in the dying minutes, Adam Phillips gave Barnsley a 2-1 victory over Leyton Orient in League One.

Ruel Sotiriou’s strike in the tenth minute appeared to have given Orient a commanding lead on the road.

However, Phillips pulled even in the 88th minute, and five minutes into extra time, Tykes’s teammate Luca Connell was sent off, Phillips scored the winning goal.

George Moncur drove to the byline, cut the ball back to Sotiriou, who delivered the finishing touch, giving the visitors the lead.

For the remainder of the match, Barnsley controlled the ball and the opportunities, but they were unable to get past the formidable visiting goalie Sol Brynn.

However, Mael De Gevigney’s ball in behind the Orient defense and Phillips’ header over the charging Brynn put an end to the opposition.

Connell complained to the referee that Orient was starting the game too slowly, and he was given a second yellow card for it.
However, Phillips overcame the numerical deficit to win it for his team when he converted Corey O’Keefe’s right-wing free-kick for his second goal.

“It’s not how we planned it,” Neill Collins, the manager of Barnsley, expressed relief.

“I believed that missing an early goal is never a good thing. But the audience and the players both responded admirably.

And we just kept going till the very end as a team. It was evident at the end that even with ten men, it’s really tough to get everyone up, and I’m really happy for everyone that we managed to score what, in my opinion, was a well-deserved winning goal.

“That may be a pretty important turning point in the season at the conclusion there. Seeing the second goal go in was fantastic.

“One thing that Adam Phillips generally doesn’t lack is quality,” Collins continued. He’s been excellent, in my opinion, and only gets better.

He did a great job in training this week, and if I had to choose one player who I thought would win, he would have been on the top of my list.

“Very courageous for his first goal to go in ahead of the keeper when he could have been smashed, and great ball play and finish for his second.”
