Breaking News: Browns could lose new coach amid wild coaching carousel…

Breaking: Amidst a crazy coaching carousel, the Browns may lose their new coach.
Even if Tommy Rees was recently hired, if the UCLA story is accurate, it won’t matter.

The Cleveland Browns might be the team next to suffer from an unusual offseason coaching carousel. The subsequent circumstances quickly came together to provide tight ends coach Tommy Rees the chance to become head coach:

Harvard College Health Care Jeff Hafley took the DC position with the Green Bay Packers.
After being hired as Ohio State University’s offensive coordinator this offseason, Bill O’Brien accepted the head coaching position at UCLA HC at Boston College. Chip Kelly agreed to take O’Brien’s place at Ohio State.

The most stunning connection of them was the one that led to the Rees to UCLA rumor. To put it plainly, a Big 10 offensive coordinator replaced a head coach who had departed the position.

There are many more specifics involved, but UCLA is now seeking a new head coach.

Let’s get Rees started.

Tommy Rees, 31, is a native of Los Angeles with strong links to UCLA thanks to his brother Danny’s Bruins career and father Bill’s 15 years of employment under Terry Donahue. Rees most recently accepted a position as the tight ends coach and pass game specialist with the Cleveland Browns, having previously spent three seasons as offensive coordinator at Notre Dame and one at Alabama.

Then, Bruin Report revealed—behind a paywall—that there was some truth to the rumor/connection linking Rees to UCLA:

It’s already interesting that an offensive coordinator for two major college schools chose a position coach job in the NFL with Rees, as it is with the rest of the crazy coaching carousel. Given his roles at Alabama and Notre Dame, it makes more sense for him to be hired as the head coach of a large collegiate program.

Not long after joining the Crimson Tide, or in this case, the Browns, they lost their new coach. After following Kallen DeBoer to Alabama as offensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies the previous season, Ryan Grubb accepted the position as offensive coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks a few weeks later.

For now, the rumors are just rumors. On the other hand, O’Brien and Kelly taking their new positions were rumors that lingered for a little while before becoming fact.
