Proposed Blockbuster Trade Sends Colts $96 Million WR…
The Indianapolis Colts are facing the looming possibility of losing wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. to free agency. To address this potential gap in their roster, Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay has proposed an intriguing solution: trading for Stefon Diggs, a two-time All-Pro wide receiver currently with the Buffalo Bills. Kay’s suggestion involves the Colts trading their 15th overall draft pick in the upcoming draft, along with a fourth-round pick in 2024, to acquire Diggs.
Kay points out that with Pittman’s impending free agency and the likelihood of a substantial contract extension, the Colts need to consider contingency plans, such as acquiring Diggs. Even if Pittman decides to stay with the team, pairing him with Diggs could significantly boost the Colts’ passing offense, which struggled in 2023, averaging just 215.6 yards per game and scoring only 18 touchdowns through the air.
Describing Diggs as a “major upgrade” for the Colts’ receiving corps, Kay highlights the impact Diggs could have on the team’s performance. Diggs, who signed a lucrative four-year, $92 million contract in 2022, brings a wealth of experience and talent to the table. His track record includes 810 receptions, 9,995 receiving yards, and 67 touchdowns over nine NFL seasons, with a standout performance in 2020 when he led the league in catches and receiving yards.
However, the prospect of acquiring Diggs is not without its challenges. At 30 years old, Diggs is older than Pittman and carries a significant cap hit of $27.8 million in 2024, with a high salary cap impact projected through 2027. While the Colts could potentially renegotiate Diggs’ contract, his current deal presents a financial hurdle, especially considering the team’s salary cap constraints.
Furthermore, pursuing a trade for Diggs and re-signing Pittman would consume a substantial portion of the Colts’ available salary cap space, limiting opportunities for other promising players like Alec Pierce and Josh Downs, who could develop into elite receivers in their own right.
While the idea of acquiring Diggs in a blockbuster trade generates excitement and speculation during the offseason, the practicality of such a move remains uncertain. It would require careful consideration of financial implications and roster development, making it a challenging proposition for the Colts to execute.
