Three QPR players that were expected to leave Loftus Road before February 2nd surprised observers by staying put.
Despite the club’s imperative to bolster their squad during the January transfer window for a better chance at Championship survival in the 2024/25 season, their activity was limited.
While they secured late acquisitions such as Isaac Hayden and Joe Hodge, the pursuit of Crystal Palace winger Malcolm Ebiowei and Luton Town midfielder Allan Campbell on loan was reportedly in progress.
In terms of departures, QPR loaned out Andre Dozzell to Birmingham City, Charlie Kelman to Wigan Athletic, and Stephen Duke-McKenna to Sutton United to ease their wage bill. However, the list of outgoing players remained short compared to expectations.
The first surprise was the retention of Morrocan winger Chair, who had garnered interest from Birmingham, but an offer made over a week before the window closed was swiftly declined, and subsequent reports indicated no further attempts.
Chris Willock, a promising player, surprisingly became available for sale due to contract considerations, despite being regarded as one of Cifuentes’ key assets. His contract situation presented an opportunity for a below-market-value deal.
Another unexpected stay was goalkeeper Joe Walsh, who, despite a loan spell at Accrington Stanley, saw no moves from lower-league teams before the window closed. With all three senior goalkeepers out of contract in the summer, QPR faces a potential dilemma in their goalkeeping lineup for the upcoming season.
