In a positive development for the Mariners, the team has expanded its roster by adding 15 international signings, following the announcement of 15 non-drafted free agents from the Dominican Republic just two weeks ago. This marks the second wave of signings during the international signing period, with this particular group comprising players from various Latin American countries excluding the Dominican Republic.
Frankie Thon Jr., the Mariners’ director of international scouting, expressed satisfaction with the diverse talent acquired from Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean. He highlighted the potential of the new players, especially in the pitching department, emphasizing the likelihood of some making an immediate impact at the DSL level in their inaugural professional year.
The standout among the signings is Gabriel Guanchez, a 16-year-old catcher from Venezuela renowned for his powerful hitting. Baseball America ranked him as the 83rd prospect in his signing class, praising his exceptional throwing arm. Thon conveyed the organization’s enthusiasm for Guanchez, noting his impressive combination of size, defensive skills, and natural hitting ability.
Among the notable additions are Cristian Aray, a 16-year-old right-handed pitcher from Venezuela who boasts a well-rounded repertoire of four pitches, displaying good fastball life and above-average control for his age. Gregori Arrieche, a 22-year-old right-handed pitcher from Venezuela, brings experience from Venezuelan winter ball, featuring a mid-90s fastball and a sweeping slider.

Deybi Castro, an 18-year-old right-handed pitcher from Nicaragua, stands out for his balanced delivery and consistent strike-throwing ability. Finally, Juan Cazares, an 18-year-old right-handed pitcher from Mexico, previously an infielder, showcases a fast arm, a low-90s fastball, and an impressive swing-and-miss curveball, having trained alongside Mariners prospect Jeter Martinez.
