Scott Servais shares his verdict on Mariners’ recent trade activity…

In the recent Extra Innings podcast, Times beat writers Ryan Divish and Adam Jude dissect the Mariners’ flurry of trades post-New Year. The trio of acquisitions—outfielder Mitch Haniger, outfielder Luke Raley, and second baseman Jorge Polanco—is under scrutiny.

The key questions revolve around the durability of Haniger, Polanco, and Mitch Garver throughout the season, the overall improvement of the Mariners as a team, the potential cost of obtaining Polanco, and the likelihood of additional moves before spring training.

Servais explained, “I focus on coaching the team rather than handling the financial side of things. However, from my understanding, we are likely to address our roster’s shortcomings. It’s evident that we need improvement, and our lineup is currently not where it needs to be.”

He added, “We’ll observe how the remainder of the offseason unfolds. Urías has shown the potential for high productivity during certain stretches. Last year, unfortunately, injuries affected his performance, and he didn’t have the typical year he’s accustomed to. Despite the eagerness for immediate results, it’s essential to recognize that this is a gradual process. Negotiations with teams and free agents require time and effort, and that’s what we’re actively engaged in at the moment.”
