Queens Park Rangers (QPR) are open to the departure of their standout player, Chris Willock, as his contract at Loftus Road is set to conclude at the end of June. Reports from Alan Nixon via Patreon suggest that the club is considering cashing in on the 25-year-old amidst the uncertainty surrounding his current contract.
Willock’s existing deal with QPR is scheduled to expire on June 30th, making the current transfer window the last opportunity for the club to receive a transfer fee if Willock chooses not to extend his contract. Last summer, QPR exercised a one-year club option to keep Willock at Loftus Road until 2024. Despite discussions about a new deal in 2022, no updates have emerged from the club since then, leaving Willock’s future in question.
Les Ferdinand, the former QPR director of football, acknowledged negotiations for a new deal back in 2022, emphasizing the financial considerations and the desire to keep the players satisfied. However, no significant progress has been reported since then.
The decision to potentially part ways with Willock comes at a crucial time for QPR, who find themselves in a challenging position in the Championship standings, currently sitting 22nd, just three points behind Huddersfield Town in 21st place, which is considered the safety threshold.
Willock, known for his ability to contribute directly to goals, had a dip in form last season, managing only eight goal contributions. In the ongoing 2023–24 season, he has recorded five contributions, with a resurgence in his playing time starting in November.
The willingness to let go of a talented player like Willock raises eyebrows, especially considering the club’s precarious position in the league. The decision may be rooted in the need to strengthen the squad in multiple positions, but with only a few days remaining in the January transfer window, QPR’s management faces a tight deadline to secure reinforcements.
The outcome of QPR’s stance on Willock will be closely watched, and it remains to be seen whether any clubs will express interest in securing his services before the transfer window concludes. The next moves for both QPR and Willock will undoubtedly shape the dynamics of the club’s squad as they navigate the challenges of the Championship and aim to secure their status in the league.
