Brian Daboll assessing Darnay Holmes’ Future with the New York Giants: To Stay or Go?

Darnay Holmes, Giants could part ways this offseason

The future of Darnay Holmes with the New York Giants is uncertain, as the one-time starting slot cornerback faces the possibility of departing from the team in the upcoming offseason. Selected in the fourth round of the 2020 draft, Holmes could become a free agent. While he hasn’t been a standout slot cornerback for the Giants, he has consistently performed adequately.

Pro Football Reference data indicates that his highest passer rating allowed in a single season was 85.7 in his rookie year, contrasting with Pro Football Focus’s career passer rating against him of 87.3. In a league with a high demand for cornerbacks, Holmes’ decent performance holds value, especially considering the Giants currently lack a clear backup option for the slot cornerback position.

Despite his proficiency, Holmes saw a decline in defensive snaps in the 2023 season, accounting for only 12% of the plays compared to previous years. The emergence of Cor’Dale Flott, who played 56% of defensive snaps, has led to questions about Holmes’ role on the team. The suggestion is to part ways with Holmes, allowing him to explore opportunities elsewhere. A potential one-year veteran minimum contract with the Giants would cost $1.125 million, but it’s proposed that Holmes may benefit more from seeking a team where he has a genuine chance of securing a starting position.
