Montreal Canadiens’ forward Brendan Gallagher faced disciplinary action during Thursday’s game against the Islanders, drawing criticism for what many consider the most egregious hit of the 2023–24 NHL season. Gallagher was penalized with a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for an illegal check to the head of Adam Pelech, who was completely unaware of Gallagher’s approaching hit.
The NHL’s Department of Player Safety has summoned Gallagher for a disciplinary hearing on Friday, where potential additional penalties, such as fines or suspensions, will be determined. Following the blindside hit, Pelech appeared disoriented as he skated off the ice, leading to heightened concern and condemnation of the incident.

Commenting on the hit, observers described it as a “chicken wing elbow” that strayed from Gallagher’s body, connecting with Pelech’s jaw. The unprovoked nature of the hit, occurring when Pelech was looking away and had already released the puck, left little room for justification. Even staunch Canadiens fans, who often defend their players, found it difficult to rationalize or defend Gallagher’s actions.
The NHL’s Department of Player Safety has not specified whether the hearing will be in-person, but it is scheduled for today. While hockey enthusiasts speculate a potential 2+ game suspension, the exact punishment remains uncertain until the official announcement.
