Breaking News: Steelers Urged to Secure Former Browns Quarterback…

As the offseason approaches, the Pittsburgh Steelers are actively exploring various options for their quarterback position. While internal candidates Mason Rudolph and Kenny Pickett are under consideration, external alternatives are also being contemplated to shape the roster for the upcoming season.

Gordon McGuiness from Pro Football Focus has identified a compelling outside option that could be an ideal fit for the Steelers—current Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield. McGuiness advocates for the Steelers to pursue Mayfield, acknowledging that although it seems probable for Mayfield to remain with the Buccaneers, the Steelers should be proactive in expressing their interest if he hits free agency.

Despite Mayfield not fully meeting the expectations associated with being a former No. 1 overall pick, McGuiness points out that he has returned to the performance levels witnessed in his second and third seasons with the Cleveland Browns. In the 2023 regular season, Mayfield earned a PFF grade of 74.6, registering 25 big-time throws and 24 turnover-worthy plays. The Buccaneers took a calculated risk on Mayfield this season, which has proven successful as they advance to the Divisional Round of the playoffs against the Detroit Lions.

Mayfield’s notable achievements this season include throwing for 4,044 yards, along with 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. The consideration for the Steelers will also hinge on the financial aspect, with Mayfield’s current Spotrac market value standing at $27 million per year for a four-year deal. Navigating their salary cap situation will be crucial, but if feasible, signing the former first-overall pick could emerge as a viable option for the Steelers in the upcoming spring.
