The day Alabama unveiled Kalen DeBoer as their new coach, Texas revealed Steve Sarkisian’s contract extension.
After arriving in Texas in January 2021, Sarkisian recently finished his third year of a six-year contract. By adding four years, it will expire in 2030.
“This is a dream job for me, as I said when I came here three years ago,” Sarkisian said in a statement. “I’m excited every day to be the head coach at the University of Texas; it’s a destination job.” We’re ecstatic about our accomplishments and proud of the culture we’ve established as well as the growth of our players, both on and off the field. However, we’re only getting started.
We have been designing this program for long-term success, as I have stated from the beginning. Our goals are to strive for excellence, secure victories, and consistently rank among the top teams in the country. And we’re incredibly fortunate to have the support of Longhorn Nation, an incredible staff, an amazing set of players, and an administration that is totally committed to helping us do that. I am so appreciative of CDC, President Hartzell, and Chairman Eltife for their unwavering support and dedication to our purpose from the beginning.
In the previous season, Sarkisian guided the Horns to a 12-2 record, their first Big 12 Championship since 2009, and their first-ever trip to the College Football Playoffs. This year’s 12 wins were only the fourth in school history to record 12 or more wins (2005, 2008, 2009, 2023). That included seven straight wins leading into the CFP, UT’s longest winning streak since 2009–10.
Texas won four games in 2023 that were ranked in the top 25 (Alabama, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, and Kansas). Among those victories was a 34–24 victory over No. 5 Alabama in Tuscaloosa, which ended the Crimson Tide’s 21-game home winning streak (43 games in a row when playing non-conference opponents).
Ten teams from the previous season’s bowl games faced the Horns as well.
Texas AD Chris Del Conte released a statement saying, “As we head into the SEC next year, we’re doing that with a great deal of momentum, a program we’re extremely proud of, and with a great head coach and leader.” “When we hired Coach Sarkisian, we believed he was the right person for the job, and he has shown us that at every turn. Coach Sark will remain our coach for a very long time, and we couldn’t be more delighted about where we are and where we’re going.
Sarkisian enters his fourth year with a 25-14 record at Texas, which he has improved from 20-7 the previous two seasons. In Big 12 regular-season play last year, Texas’ eight victories were a record since 2009. He is 71-49 in his ten years as head coach, including seven bowl invitations.
