A current roster of Vikings players that will be available for free in spring…
Since we looked at every Vikings 2024 free agent last summer, a lot has happened. Here is the most recent roster of Minnesota’s 28 in-house free agents for the upcoming spring season. The two main
Kirk Cousins, quarterback, OLB As the most significant free agent signed by the Vikings and among the most well-known players in the NFL this season, Danielle Hunter Cousins stands alone in this regard. He’s expressed a desire to return to Minnesota. Head coach Kevin O’Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah have expressed their desire for him to return. All that will ultimately matter is whether or not they can reach a consensus on a cost and arrangement that benefit both parties.
Along with Josh Allen of Jacksonville, Hunter is among the best edge rushers in the game this season and belongs in this echelon of free agents. Someone is going to throw him a bag because he just had a 16.5-sack Pro Bowl season and doesn’t turn 30 until October of next year. Is it going to be the Vikings? Due to void years that would appear on the Vikings’ books if they signed elsewhere, both players have significant dead-cap hits. Newly acquired players LB Jordan Hicks LG Risner Dalton OLB Marcus Davenport Under Brian Flores, Hicks has been a vital leader for the Vikings defense the last two seasons, and in 2023 he will achieve even greater success. Risner, who was signed early in the season, performed well enough for Ezra Cleveland to be traded for nothing. Due to injuries, Davenport was a huge bust as a free agent signing, appearing in only two complete games. If he returned, it would be incredible. 2020 Vikings draft selections OLB Wonnum, D.J. WR Osborn, K.J. Troy Dye RFA Blake Brandel DT James Lynch Before getting hurt, Wonnum enjoyed his greatest season and showed leadership in a contract year. Osborn struggled with dips at times, so his year wasn’t quite what he had hoped for. Lynch was on injured reserve for the whole year. Since Justin Jefferson is bound by a five-year option, he is not present. Josh Metellus, who received an extension before the season, isn’t either. midseason acquisitions with flashes QB Dobbs Josh RB Cam Akers (RFA) LB Anthony Barr I’ll never forget those first three Dobbs games. Unfortunately, Akers was playing very well until he tore his Achilles again. Barr didn’t play much after signing off the street towards the end of the season. Everyone else OL OL David Quessenberry K. Oli Udoh Greg Joseph (DL): Chris Reed, tight end; Jonathan Bullard; Brandon Powell; Sheldon Day; Austin Schlottmann; OL Johnny Mundt LB Hakeem Adeniji DL and Nick Vigil OL Tonga Khyiris (RFA) TE Nick Muse (DL) ERFA Smith, T.J. (ERFA) and Jackson, Theo (ERFA) The most well-known names here are most likely Joseph and Bullard. This category also includes a number of offensive linemen who are suitable as backups. Recall that players with three accrued seasons and a contract that has expired are restricted free agents (RFAs). Via the NFL: “RFAs are free to negotiate and sign with any team, but their original team can offer them one of various qualifying offers (“tenders”) that come with the right of first refusal and/or draft-pick compensation.” Players with less than three accrued seasons and an expired contract are considered exclusive rights-free agents (ERFAs). “If his original team offers him a one-year contract at the league minimum (based on his credited seasons), the player cannot negotiate with other teams.”
