Entering the fourth quarter of Sunday’s match at Ford Field, the Detroit Lions held a seven-point lead over the Minnesota Vikings, with the score at 20-13.
Despite the Lions appearing to be in control, the game’s dynamics were unpredictable, especially with the outstanding performance of Minnesota’s Justin Jefferson.
Then came a pivotal moment. On 2nd and 5 from their own 30-yard line, Lions quarterback Jared Goff initiated the fourth quarter by connecting with Amon-Ra St. Brown for a 70-yard touchdown, extending Detroit’s lead to 14 points with just under 15 minutes remaining.
This play marked the Lions’ final touchdown, sealing a 30-20 victory and concluding their regular season at 12-5.
The impactful play not only secured Detroit’s win but also contributed to St. Brown’s impressive performance. He concluded the game with seven receptions, 144 yards, and one touchdown.
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell addressed the play post-game, acknowledging its significance in dashing their playoff hopes. O’Connell explained the defensive scheme, hinting at a potential breakdown in coverage that allowed Goff to exploit the opening.
Despite his perspective from the sideline, O’Connell had not yet discussed the specifics with defensive coordinator Brian Flores or other team members.
Goff and St. Brown’s game-changing play added to the latter’s outstanding season. Despite frustration over a Pro Bowl snub, St. Brown completed the 2023 regular season with impressive stats: 119 receptions, 1,515 yards, and 10 touchdowns, ranking him fifth among all NFL receivers.
The culmination of this career-best season further emphasized the significance of the touchdown strike in the Lions’ victory.
