Russell Martin, manager of St Mary’s, has dispelled rumors of Southampton striker Sekou Mara’s departure during the January transfer window. Despite limited game time, Mara, who has made 16 appearances this season, will stay with the club, as Martin affirmed to the Daily Echo.

Throughout the campaign, Mara has faced challenges in securing substantial playing time, often featuring as a substitute or remaining unused on the bench, even during Ross Stewart’s extended absence due to injury. The competition from successful assets like Che Adams and the valuable contribution of Adam Armstrong has further constrained Mara’s opportunities.

While Mara might have anticipated more playtime, particularly after some strikers left St Mary’s on loan during the summer, the situation has not unfolded as expected for the 21-year-old Frenchman. Recent speculation linked him to a move to Ligue 1 side Lille, and given Southampton’s willingness to sell players in the previous window, a departure wouldn’t have been surprising. However, Martin unequivocally stated that Mara will not be leaving the club this month.

Martin emphasized Mara’s qualities, describing him as a skilled footballer, a proficient technician, and an excellent athlete. Despite the limited minutes, the manager acknowledged Mara’s recent performances and expressed confidence in his increasing prominence within the team.
