Cincinnati is making waves with its personnel moves, and two Bengals executives find themselves on Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer’s radar as potential candidates for NFL general manager positions in the upcoming offseason. The names in question are Senior Personnel Executive Trey Brown and Director of Player Personnel Duke Tobin.
Breer highlights Brown’s integral role in shaping the Bengals’ roster over the past three years, emphasizing Cincinnati’s aggressive approach to leveraging Joe Burrow’s rookie-contract window to build a competitive team. Brown’s versatile experience includes contributions to the Bengals alongside well-respected figures like Mike Potts and Steve Radicevic, providing valuable exposure for larger roles.
Having previously worked with Bill Belichick in New England and Howie Roseman in Philadelphia, Brown’s background extends to decision-making positions in the AAF and XFL, with potential ties leading him back to the Patriots through Jerod Mayo.
Meanwhile, Tobin, with the Bengals since 1999, operates as the de facto GM in Cincinnati, handling significant responsibilities despite not holding the official title. Breer notes Tobin’s leadership during distinct team builds around quarterbacks Andy Dalton and Joe Burrow, showcasing success under different coaching regimes. Despite a substantial workload with a small scouting staff, Tobin has effectively managed the challenges.
However, Breer acknowledges Tobin’s comfort in Cincinnati, especially with the presence of Joe Burrow, making it a question mark as to whether he would consider leaving the team.
While it might be surprising to witness Tobin’s departure from Cincinnati, the unpredictable nature of the NFL hiring landscape keeps possibilities open.
