In a strategic move to bolster their roster, the Edmonton Elks have recently signed quarterback McLoud Bethel-Thompson to a significant one-year deal, potentially reaching up to $500,000 with added incentives. This acquisition, reported by TSN’s Farhan Lalji, concludes weeks of speculation about the Elks’ pursuit of an experienced quarterback to enhance their offensive capabilities and mentor the promising QB Tre Ford.
Bethel-Thompson, a two-time Grey Cup champion, was absent from the CFL in 2023 as he chose to stay closer to home, signing with the New Orleans Breakers in the USFL during the offseason. In his 10-game stint with the Breakers, he showcased his skill set by contributing 2,433 passing yards, 14 touchdown passes, and 8 interceptions, playing a pivotal role in the team’s 7–3 record for the season.
The Edmonton Elks now benefit from Bethel-Thompson’s extensive experience, spanning both the Canadian and American football landscapes. His professional journey includes stops with the San Jose SaberCats, San Francisco 49ers, Sacramento Mountain Lions, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Toronto Argonauts (2017–2022), and the New Orleans Breakers in the United States Football League (2023).
Despite spending much of his NFL career on practice squads, Bethel-Thompson endeared himself to Toronto Argonauts fans during the 2019 season. Despite the inevitable highs and lows of professional football, he consistently answered critics with his on-field performance, showcasing leadership through example. His peak form emerged during his time with the Toronto Argonauts, demonstrating a quarterback who prioritizes both team and family.
A memorable moment occurred during the 2022 Grey Cup victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers when Bethel-Thompson passed the torch to the now-starting quarterback, Chad Kelly. This symbolic gesture marked a transition, as he encouraged Kelly to embark on his football journey. Notably absent from the Grey Cup Championship parade in Toronto, Bethel-Thompson addressed the city and Argonauts fans via jumbotron, expressing his commitment to spending quality time with his family before American Thanksgiving Day.
With the addition of Bethel-Thompson, the Edmonton Elks now boast an upgraded quarterback position, featuring a dual threat with both him and Tre Ford. As the 2024 CFL season approaches in June and the Edmonton Elks prepare to celebrate their 75th anniversary, this signing comes at a crucial time for a team looking to restore its winning tradition.
