“Rejuvenated and refreshed”: Chris Willock sends a ‘classy’ message as he aims to recapture his impressive form and fire QPR to championship…

Head coach Marti Cifuentes faced a significant challenge upon joining QPR, as the team struggled to score goals under the previous management. The playing style under Gareth Ainsworth had become rigid and predictable, lacking creativity and bravery in the final third. Cifuentes needed to inject new life into the squad to enhance their attacking prowess.

Fortunately, Chris Willock’s return coincided with Cifuentes’ appointment, providing a potential solution to QPR’s goal-scoring woes. Willock, who had been plagued by injuries, gradually made his way back into the matchday squad. His impact has been evident in the team’s recent victories against Stoke, Preston, and Hull, with Willock finding the net in each game.

Despite being a player with the potential to be a matchwinner, Willock had faced setbacks due to a series of unfortunate injuries. Under Michael Beale’s management, he played a crucial role in the early stages of the 2022–23 campaign, scoring six goals in his first nine appearances. However, a hamstring injury sidelined him for the entire month of October.

Willock’s return in the following month seemed rushed, and he continued to play regularly under new boss Neil Critchley. Another hamstring injury, though, resulted in another lengthy spell on the sidelines. A subsequent change in management to Gareth Ainsworth did not improve the situation, with Willock getting limited playing time in the final games of the season.

The start of the current season did not bring significant improvements for Willock, as he was sparingly used in cameo roles and started just three times in 14 games. However, Cifuentes’ appointment has breathed new life into the future. Willock expressed his enjoyment of the freedom given by the new manager, emphasizing the focus on attacking and creating opportunities.

One notable change under Cifuentes has been the rekindling of the partnership between Willock and Ilias Chair, who now play a more central role. Despite interruptions caused by injuries and tactical changes under various managers, the duo has a strong understanding on the field. Willock highlighted Chair as a terrific player and expressed optimism about their partnership.

However, Willock has faced recent challenges with niggling injuries, sidelining him for games against Millwall and Cardiff. With QPR engaged in a relegation battle, Willock’s fitness and contributions become crucial. Recognizing his role as an attacking player, he expressed the importance of scoring goals and providing assists. Willock is determined to stay committed, work hard for the team, and contribute positively to QPR’s survival.

Looking ahead, Willock aims to recapture his impressive form from the 2021/22 season, where he scored seven goals and contributed 11 assists. He pledged to bring attacking flair, more goals, and assists, emphasizing his commitment and enjoyment of the game. QPR fans, in need of positive developments in 2023, will undoubtedly hope Willock’s New Year’s resolution translates into success as the season progresses.
