Sean Dyche has broken his silence regarding Mason Holgate’s loan spell at Southampton, revealing that talks between Everton and Southampton about Holgate’s future have not yet taken place. The defender, on a season-long loan at St. Mary’s, has struggled to secure regular playing time, making just five appearances for the Premier League-chasing Saints.
Despite being the fifth-choice centre-back at Goodison Park, negotiations regarding his recall in the January transfer window have not commenced.
Southampton manager Russell Martin previously mentioned that the decision to recall Holgate rested with Everton. However, Dyche disclosed that discussions are yet to begin. Speaking ahead of Everton’s FA Cup third-round match against Crystal Palace, Dyche stated that Holgate expressed a desire for a new challenge and a fresh experience.
Despite the limited playing time, Dyche emphasized that Holgate is currently a Southampton player, acknowledging the professional challenges that come with such situations. The 27-year-old’s future remains uncertain as talks between the two clubs await initiation.
