The Minnesota Vikings are undergoing yet another change in their quarterback lineup ahead of the upcoming game against the Green Bay Packers. This marks the fourth alteration to the starting lineup since Kirk Cousins suffered a season-ending injury to his right Achilles tendon in Week 8, as confirmed by coach Kevin O’Connell. Rookie Jaren Hall is set to start, replacing Nick Mullens, who struggled in his two games as the starter, finishing with 714 yards, four touchdowns, and six interceptions, resulting in a 0-2 record.
With a 19.8% probability of making the playoffs, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index, the Vikings find themselves on the outskirts of the NFC playoff picture after recent losses. The team’s turnover issues, totaling 30 (tied for second-most in the NFL), have significantly contributed to their challenges.
Coach O’Connell believes that providing Hall with a full week of preparation and a well-defined game plan will be beneficial at this crucial stage. Emphasizing the importance of ball control, O’Connell expressed eagerness to see what the rookie can achieve.
Before his injury, Jaren Hall, a fifth-round pick in the 2023 draft, served as Cousins’ backup. Despite a limited appearance in Week 9 due to a concussion, the Vikings were encouraged by Hall’s performance, showcasing mobility and completing 5 of 6 throws for 78 yards.
Hall, reflecting on his injury, stressed the need to adhere to the system and recognized the physical demands of the NFL. He underscored the value of strategic execution in running plays and understanding the long-term dynamics of football.
Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson expressed confidence in Hall’s development, praising his ability to quickly grasp the game as a rookie quarterback. Despite Hall facing challenges with injuries throughout the year, Jefferson sees promise in the young quarterback’s ability to ignite the offense.
Coach O’Connell announced that Nick Mullens will serve as the Vikings’ backup quarterback for the upcoming game. Mullens’ stint as the starting quarterback was marred by interceptions and fumbles, leading to his replacement by the emerging rookie, Jaren Hall.
