Texans’ rookie quarterback, C.J. Stroud, underwent a unique perspective shift over the past couple of weeks as he navigated the NFL concussion protocol, missing out on crucial games against the Titans and Browns. Forced to watch from home, Stroud, known for his leadership on the field, maintained his supportive role, staying connected with teammates and diligently keeping abreast of game plans.
Despite his inability to control his absence from the field, Stroud remained level-headed, avoiding emotional extremes and focusing on maintaining a calm demeanor. Having successfully cleared the NFL’s concussion protocol after two consecutive days of practice, Stroud is set to start for the Texans in their upcoming clash against the Titans, marking their final home regular season game of the 2023 campaign.
Expressing his readiness, Stroud emphasized feeling back to his usual self, highlighting the significance of his recovery. Reflecting on the concussion and its aftermath, he acknowledged the uniqueness of each player’s experience with such injuries, stressing that the recovery process wasn’t universal. Grateful for the thorough support from the training staff, Stroud appreciated their honesty and careful approach, ultimately leading to his successful return.
Due to the injury, Stroud refrained from engaging in any physical football activities from December 10 until his return to practice on Wednesday. This hiatus, the longest period of physical inactivity for him in the entire year, provided a much-needed break for recovery and rest, allowing his body to recuperate from the relentless pace since August of 2022.
Returning to the practice field after the extended break, Stroud didn’t feel any significant rust, crediting Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson for his role in ensuring a seamless return. Stroud expressed regaining his groove, attributing it to Johnson’s efforts in reinstating his rhythm, timing, and preparing him for the upcoming game through simulated live scenarios during practice.
Anticipating his return on New Year’s Eve against an AFC South rival, Stroud is optimistic about performing at or even surpassing his previous levels. With the Texans in “playoff mode,” offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik expressed excitement about having one of their key offensive assets back. Slowik highlighted Stroud’s intangible qualities, describing him as a special, energetic, and competitive player whose presence positively influences the team, both on and off the field. The overarching opportunity for Stroud and the Texans lies in securing a playoff spot, a prospect they approach with enthusiasm and determination.
