Potential Striker Targets Emerge for Ipswich Town Following George Hirst’s Injury
Ipswich Town face a heightened need for a new striker following George Hirst’s hamstring injury against Leicester on Boxing Day. Despite a relatively injury-free season for key players, Kieran McKenna must address this setback, with Hirst expected to be sidelined for an extended period of time. As January approaches, McKenna’s approach to the transfer market becomes crucial, especially considering the potential months Hirst may be unavailable.
The injury has brought attention to Birmingham loanee Jay Stansfield, who was previously linked with Ipswich. However, with uncertainty surrounding Hirst’s return, three other strikers are now under consideration to fill the void and possibly compete with Hirst upon his return.
One potential option is Callum Marshall, a Northern Irish teenager currently excelling for West Ham’s under-21 team. Marshall has demonstrated his goal-scoring prowess with 19 goals in 13 appearances at that level. With limited playing time in the senior squad, a loan move to Ipswich could offer Marshall valuable experience in a more competitive setting, benefiting both parties.
Another candidate is Mark O’Mahony, an 18-year-old Brighton prospect seeking a breakthrough into the first team. O’Mahony, following in the footsteps of Evan Ferguson, has showcased his talent with nine goals in as many Premier League 2 matches for Brighton’s under-21s. While appearing on the Premier League bench, O’Mahony could benefit from a short-term loan deal, presenting Ipswich with a promising option.
For a more permanent solution, Ipswich might consider Lawrence Shankland. The 28-year-old Scottish striker, currently with Hearts, has a prolific goal-scoring record since returning from Belgium in 2022. With approximately a year and a-half left on his contract, Shankland’s experience and goal-scoring ability could make him a worthwhile investment for Ipswich, even if it involves a significant transfer fee.
While Shankland’s acquisition might require a substantial financial commitment, Ipswich’s pursuit of a reliable attacker could justify the investment. As McKenna and his recruitment team evaluate their options, the urgency to secure a suitable replacement for Hirst is evident. The looming January transfer window provides an opportunity for Ipswich Town to strengthen their squad and maintain their impressive form in the 2023–24 season, despite the unexpected setback.
