Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith expressed his dissatisfaction with the Denver Broncos’ decision to bench Russell Wilson for the remainder of the season. Smith, a former teammate of Wilson’s during their time in Seattle, took to social media to post “FREE 3,” referencing Wilson’s jersey number, following the news that Jarrett Stidham would replace Wilson in the final two games of the 2023 season.
Having spent three seasons as Wilson’s backup in Seattle, Smith stepped in as the starter in the subsequent campaign after Wilson was traded to the Broncos in March 2022. In his breakout year, Smith threw for 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, leading the league in completion percentage (69.8%) and earning his first Pro Bowl appearance.
Wilson’s tenure with the Broncos, which began two offseasons ago, did not live up to expectations. His first season in Denver saw disappointing numbers, with 3,524 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, marking the worst statistical year of his NFL career. Despite a more respectable performance in 2023, throwing for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions with a completion rate of 66.4%, Wilson’s strained relationship with first-year head coach Sean Payton and the team’s overall lack of success led to his benching.
The Broncos, with a 7-8 record, are set to face the Los Angeles Chargers, while Geno Smith and the Seahawks, at 8-7, will take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in their respective matchups.
