Wrexham’s boss sent a six-word message after a 0-1 win at the County Ground…

PHIL PARKINSON: “A very important win for us.”

Wrexham Secures Crucial 1-0 Victory Over Swindon at The County Ground

Phil Parkinson expressed the significance of Wrexham’s 1-0 triumph against Swindon Town at The County Ground, describing it as “a very important win” that narrowed the gap on League Two leaders Stockport County. James McClean’s 13th-minute goal propelled Wrexham to their third consecutive victory, placing them second in the table, just four points behind Stockport with a game in hand.

Despite the early lead, Wrexham had numerous opportunities to extend their advantage and seal the game on either side of halftime. The opposition’s goalkeeper made remarkable saves, thwarting Wrexham’s attempts to secure a more comfortable victory. The threat from Swindon, a team known for their goal-scoring prowess, remained present, particularly after James Jones received a second yellow card with 15 minutes remaining.

Parkinson acknowledged the missed chances to put the game beyond reach but believed his team deserved the win. He highlighted the exceptional performance of Swindon’s goalkeeper and acknowledged the tense moments following the sending-off, emphasizing the resilience displayed by Wrexham.

Despite facing challenges before kick-off, including illness affecting key players and the logistical challenge of a Boxing Day fixture over 150 miles away, Parkinson commended his team’s ability to cope with the disruptions. Considering these factors, he deemed the victory crucial.

In the absence of star striker Paul Mullin and other affected players, James McClean, deployed as a wing-back by Parkinson, partnered with Sam Dalby in the attack. The decision proved effective, with Parkinson praising the energy and excellence displayed by the duo, causing significant problems for Swindon’s defense.

“Mulls was ill overnight; he felt a little bit better at lunchtime, but his energy levels were never going to be high, and Jake went down ill as well,” added Parkinson.

“We thought long and hard about it, but James’ energy up there with Sam made thought they were excellent.

“They caused real problems.”
