Brighton’s head coach, Roberto De Zerbi, has confirmed a setback for winger Kaoru Mitoma, who sustained an ankle injury during the team’s recent 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on December 21. Initially hopeful for a swift recovery, De Zerbi now anticipates Mitoma’s absence for approximately six weeks, ruling him out for the foreseeable future.
The 26-year-old Japanese international, who was spotted with a protective boot and crutches after the match, is unlikely to participate in the upcoming Asian Cup with Japan scheduled from January 12 to February 10.
In addition to Mitoma, Brighton faces a substantial injury crisis with several key players unavailable for their upcoming clash against Tottenham. De Zerbi revealed that, apart from Mitoma, the sidelined players include Solly March (knee), Julio Enciso (knee), Ansu Fati (thigh), Adam Webster (undisclosed), Tariq Lamptey (thigh), and Joel Veltman (knee).
However, there is a glimmer of positive news as Pervis Estupinan is expected to be on the bench, recovering from a thigh issue. Jakub Moder, returning from an 18-month ACL injury, is not yet fit for a spot in the starting XI. The mounting injuries present a challenging scenario for Brighton as they prepare to face Tottenham at home.
