Nottingham Forest is reportedly eyeing Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Jose Sa as manager Nuno Espirito Santo considers options to enhance the team’s goalkeeping situation. Forest underwent significant changes in their goalkeeping department in 2023, with loanees Dean Henderson and Keylor Navas departing and new acquisitions Matt Turner from Arsenal and Odysseas Vlachodimos from Benfica coming in.
The current goalkeeping scenario has seen Turner recently regaining his starting position after initially losing it to Vlachodimos. The constant rotation is less than ideal, prompting Forest to explore potential solutions, with the latest reports linking them to Jose Sa.
According to The Sun, Forest is in competition with Saudi Arabian clubs for the signature of the Wolves goalkeeper. Previous rumors over the summer suggested Forest’s interest in Sa, which they eventually did not pursue. However, with Nuno Espirito Santo now at the helm of Forest, Sa has reemerged as a target for the club.
Despite Sa and Nuno not coinciding at Wolves due to different timelines, the two share a history from their time at Porto during the 2016–17 season. Nuno, having been a goalkeeper himself, may have recognized Sa’s potential back then, even though Sa served as a backup goalkeeper at the time.
The Wolves, having benched Sa earlier in the season, might be open to selling him, with Crystal Palace’s Sam Johnstone rumored as a potential replacement. Nuno, addressing Forest’s goalkeeping situation, stressed the need for improvement across the board, stating that the decision on the goalkeeper, likely Turner, for the upcoming game against Newcastle United will be based on performance.
While Nuno appears to favor Turner at the moment, his emphasis on improvement suggests a potential shift to Vlachodimos or even the addition of another goalkeeper, such as Sa, in the January transfer window. Nuno’s background as a goalkeeper during his playing career suggests a keen focus on this position, reinforcing the possibility of seeking reinforcements to bolster Forest’s goalkeeping options and address concerns about consistent performance.
