Southampton manager Russell Martin shared insights into his departure from Swansea City in anticipation of their upcoming clash with his current side. The Boxing Day fixture sees Martin’s high-flying Southampton facing his former club at St Mary’s.
After a two-year tenure in south Wales, Martin left Swansea in the summer, citing a lack of clarity regarding his long-term future as the primary reason. Although his contract was set to expire in 2024, the former Scotland international sought an extension to provide transparency to players and staff about the club’s direction.

Reflecting on his time at Swansea, Martin acknowledged paying the price for his honesty and transparency with the media, stating, “I definitely paid the price for that eventually.” Despite an impressive end to the season, where Swansea went unbeaten in nine games and finished in 10th place, just three points away from the playoffs, Martin’s departure signaled the end of his tenure.
The former MK Dons manager had hoped for support during a challenging run of form, particularly in the January transfer window, but the anticipated reinforcements never materialized. Swansea failed to secure a single player, prompting Martin to voice his dissatisfaction with the club’s American owners publicly.
Martin admitted, “I was as honest [with the fans] through you guys [in the media] as I could be, and probably paid the price for that eventually.” Despite the challenges, he expressed no regrets, emphasizing the brilliance of the place and the club. Martin acknowledged the positive turn of events for him, being at a fantastic club like Southampton, where he and the team are enjoying themselves.
Looking ahead to the upcoming clash with Swansea, Martin confessed mixed emotions, stating, “I have to be honest, I am not looking forward to it, purely because to compete against so many people that you have a lot of fondness and affection for is quite difficult.”
Acknowledging the diverse opinions among supporters during his time at Swansea, Martin recognized the divide caused by his possession-based philosophy. While some fans appreciated his unique approach, others were critical due to the perceived risk of conceding easy goals.
Despite the differences in opinions, Martin anticipated a decent reception on Boxing Day, as fans could at least recognize the effort and commitment he and his team had put in during his tenure.
