Matthews scores twice, leads Maple Leafs over Blue Jackets

In a Saturday night matchup, the Toronto Maple Leafs secured a 4-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets, with Auston Matthews continuing his remarkable performance, contributing two goals and an assist. Matthews has now scored in seven consecutive games, amassing an impressive 12 goals during this streak and bringing his total for the season to 28, the highest in the NHL.

The Maple Leafs were keen on rebounding from a recent setback, notably a 9-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres, and head coach Sheldon Keefe expressed satisfaction with how the team responded to that challenge. William Nylander played a pivotal role in the victory, notching a short-handed goal and providing two assists, extending his point streak to 11 games. Additionally, John Tavares found the back of the net, and Mitchell Marner contributed with two assists.

The first period saw an unfortunate incident for the Blue Jackets, losing center Sean Kuraly to an abdominal injury with just 18.3 seconds remaining. Although the injury did not initially seem serious, Kuraly was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. The period was temporarily suspended, and the remaining time was played just before the start of the second period.

Matthews showcased his scoring prowess early in the game, delivering a one-timer at the 8:20 mark of the first period. This remarkable feat makes him the first player since Jaromir Jagr in the 1996-1997 season to reach 27 or more goals in the first 30 games of a season.

The second period witnessed a back-and-forth exchange of goals. Justin Danforth of the Blue Jackets leveled the score with his eighth goal of the season just 22 seconds in, but Tavares quickly responded, giving Toronto a 2-1 lead at 2:58 during a 4-on-4 play.

Matthews continued his dominant performance in the second period, notching a power-play goal at 8:21. Nylander sealed the victory for the Maple Leafs with his 16th goal of the season at 11:51 into the third period.

Maple Leafs goaltender Martin Jones played a crucial role in the win, making 27 saves. The victory halted Toronto’s two-game losing streak, providing a positive note as the team heads into the holiday break. Coach Keefe commended the players for their response and effort, emphasizing the importance of concluding the pre-holiday games on a high note.
