The Houston Texans declared on Friday that their quarterback, C.J. Stroud, will be sidelined for the upcoming Sunday’s game against Cleveland. Stroud sustained a concussion in Week 14’s 30-6 defeat to the New York Jets and has remained in the concussion protocol, causing him to miss Week 15 against the Tennessee Titans.
When questioned earlier in the week about the possibility of Stroud’s injury ending his season, Texans coach DeMeco Ryans responded with a firm “No.” Stepping into Stroud’s shoes, quarterback Case Keenum took charge during the Texans’ 19-16 overtime triumph against the Titans on Sunday. Stroud did not practice on Wednesday.
Coleridge Bernard “C. J.” Stroud IV, born on October 3, 2001, serves as the quarterback for the Houston Texans in the National Football League (NFL). His college football career at Ohio State garnered numerous accolades, including holding several school records and becoming the first player to throw for six touchdowns three times.
Stroud made his NFL debut on September 10, 2023, in Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens, recording 242 passing yards in a 25–9 loss. Week 2 saw him throw his first two NFL touchdowns against the Indianapolis Colts, concluding with 384 passing yards in a 20–31 loss. Notably, Stroud’s 384 yards marked the second-highest for a Texans rookie quarterback in a single game.
In the subsequent week against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Stroud’s performance included 20-of-30 completions for 280 yards with two touchdowns, contributing to the Texans’ 37–17 victory. His impressive start in the NFL history books is evident as he joined the exclusive company of Cam Newton and Justin Herbert, being one of the only players to accumulate at least 900 passing yards in their first three games. Stroud’s outstanding achievements earned him the Offensive Rookie of the Month title for September.
However, the rookie’s impressive streak came to a halt in Week 4 against the New Orleans Saints, reaching 191 attempts. Despite a brief interruption, Stroud continued to make history in Week 8, facing fellow top draft pick Bryce Young. This game marked only the third instance in NFL history where a quarterback threw for at least 470 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions.
Unfortunately, Stroud’s recent injury has placed him in the concussion protocol for ten days, with Coach DeMeco Ryans emphasizing the uniqueness of each concussion.
While Ryans dismissed the notion of Stroud’s season-ending due to the injury, the quarterback’s absence comes at a critical juncture for the Texans, who are on the verge of securing a playoff spot in the AFC, currently positioned just outside the final playoff spot with an 8-6 record. Despite Stroud’s absence, Case Keenum stepped up, contributing 229 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the recent game. As the Texans remain in contention for the AFC South crown, Stroud’s return remains uncertain, posing a challenge for the team in their playoff pursuit.
