Flyers’ 19-year-old prospect sent a reassuring two-word message to fans on social media as he opens up on…

Matvei Michkov: “I’m back.”

Philadelphia Flyers prospect Matvei Michkov sent a reassuring message to fans via Instagram on December 21, declaring, “I’m back.” The 19-year-old had been sidelined since December 1 due to pneumonia, a setback that prevented him from participating in the KHL All-Star Game despite being voted in for the first time in his career. Despite his illness, Michkov showcased his dedication to returning to the ice by posting a video of himself engaged in solo training, demonstrating skating maneuvers, edge work, and puck handling.

Originally expected to make his comeback on December 26, as announced by his club HK Sochi, Michkov appears to be progressing well towards that target. The Flyers’ No. 7 overall pick is diligently ramping up his training, focusing on regaining his conditioning. Before falling ill, Michkov had been enjoying an exceptionally productive season in the KHL, making a significant impact at a young age. His performance in the 2023-24 season has even outshone that of seasoned player Evgeni Malkin, a notable figure for the Philadelphia Flyers.

While Michkov experienced a slight dip in form before his illness, failing to register a point in three of his last four games, his overall statistics remain impressive. Across 29 games, he has accumulated 11 goals, 15 assists, and 26 points. Projecting his current pace, Michkov is on track to conclude the season with 21 goals, 28 assists, and 49 points in 56 games played. However, this projection is subject to change based on any additional time missed due to his recovery.

The announcement of Michkov’s return is met with relief, particularly considering the severity of pneumonia, especially for athletes. The young sensation’s dedication to training and the upcoming return is a positive development for both him and Flyers fans alike.
