Seahawks’ 33-year-old expressed disappointment and claims he’s disheartened by Bench Role on MNF, Eager for Drew Lock’s Success…

Geno Smith, the backup quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, expressed disappointment over not starting in Monday night’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite feeling hurt, Smith was genuinely happy for Drew Lock, who played a crucial role in ending the Seahawks’ four-game losing streak by throwing the winning touchdown in the final minute.

The uncertainty remains regarding Smith’s starting status for the upcoming game against the Tennessee Titans in Nashville, as he has been recovering from a groin injury that sidelined him for the last two games. Smith conveyed his hope to start on Sunday, revealing that he has been a full participant in practice, signaling positive signs for his return.

Having sustained a groin injury during practice on December 7, Smith was limited in his participation throughout the previous week, causing him to miss the game against the San Francisco 49ers. Drew Lock stepped in as the starter, receiving all first-team work leading up to the Eagles game. The Seahawks initially anticipated Lock starting again, but a pregame workout with Smith revealed his unexpected readiness.

Coach Pete Carroll expressed optimism about Smith’s return on Wednesday, and the quarterback’s full participation in recent practices adds to the likelihood of his comeback. Smith shared that he is “feeling pretty good” and continues to improve.

The decision not to start Smith against the Eagles was a tough one for Carroll, who had second thoughts after Smith’s impressive pregame workout. Ultimately, the coaching staff, relying on the advice of the medical and training staffs, stuck with the original plan but made Smith active as a backup. Smith described the subsequent conversation with Carroll as “gut-wrenching” and admitted feeling hurt by the decision.

Acknowledging the need for the coach to make decisions in the best interest of the team and the players, Smith recognized the importance of moving on and supporting his teammates. Despite not playing, he was seen celebrating with Lock on the sideline after Lock’s game-winning 29-yard touchdown pass.

Smith and Lock, despite competing for the starting job last offseason, have developed a close relationship. Smith expressed genuine excitement for Lock’s success, describing the win against the Eagles on “Monday Night Football” as a memorable moment. He praised Lock’s performance throughout the game and highlighted the significance of the victory against a formidable opponent.

The Seahawks, dealing with injuries, listed running back Ken Walker III, cornerback Devon Witherspoon, and safety Jamal Adams as nonparticipants in practice for the second consecutive day. Additionally, safety Julian Love, who replaced Adams against the Eagles and had two interceptions in the fourth quarter, missed practice due to his wife’s scheduled childbirth this week.
