Head Coach Ryan Day sent a stunning message to his players, outlining his expectations as he remains optimistic about the Buckeyes’ roster for the 2024 season.

Ohio State’s football program faces a significant challenge with 14 players leaving for the transfer portal, but Head Coach Ryan Day remains optimistic about the Buckeyes’ roster for the 2024 season. Despite not adding any new players yet, Day asserts that all but one or two of the 85 available scholarships for the upcoming season will likely be filled by the existing roster.

During a press conference on National Signing Day, Day expressed confidence in retaining many of the team’s top draft-eligible players for the next season. He believes that several players view their time at Ohio State as unfinished business and see the opportunity to return for another season as a chance to contribute to a successful team on both offensive and defensive fronts.

As the Cotton Bowl approaches, only running back Miyan Williams, recovering from a knee injury, has officially declared for the 2024 NFL draft. While fifth-year seniors Cade Stover, Tommy Eichenberg, Steele Chambers, and potential top-three draft pick Marvin Harrison Jr. are expected to forgo their final season, no official announcements have been made.

Considering the departures to the transfer portal and players exhausting their eligibility after the Cotton Bowl, the projected scholarship count for Ohio State in 2024 would be 86, including the 20 recruits who signed on National Signing Day. If only two or three more departures occur, the Buckeyes would retain the majority of their junior class. This includes key players such as TreVeyon Henderson, Emeka Egbuka, Denzel Burke, Jordan Hancock, JT Tuimoloau, Jack Sawyer, Mike Hall, Tyleik Williams, and Donovan Jackson, forming a strong foundation for the team’s future.
