Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud is anticipated to miss his second consecutive game against the Cleveland Browns this Sunday as he remains in concussion protocol, ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime reported. Stroud is experiencing common concussion symptoms, such as light sensitivity, but is making gradual strides in his recovery.
The rookie QB sustained a concussion during the Texans’ defeat to the New York Jets on December 10, courtesy of a late hit by Jets tackle Quinnen Williams. In Stroud’s absence, Case Keenum assumed the starting quarterback role in the Texans’ recent 19-16 victory against the Tennessee Titans. Keenum completed 23 of 36 passes for 229 yards, registering one touchdown and one interception, contributing to the Texans’ 8-6 record and keeping their playoff aspirations alive.
Should Stroud be sidelined against the Browns, Keenum is poised to start over Davis Mills. Stroud’s injury is a significant setback for both him and the Texans. As the 2023 No. 2 overall pick, Stroud was a formidable contender to lead the NFL in passing yards and remains a top candidate for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
In the 13 games he played this season, Stroud boasts a 62.4 percent completion rate, amassing 3,631 passing yards with 20 touchdowns and five interceptions. Additionally, he contributed 143 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. Stroud played a pivotal role in elevating the Texans into serious playoff contention after three consecutive losing seasons. With Keenum likely at the helm for another week, the Texans face the challenge of delivering a robust performance to stay in the postseason race.
