Although Rodgers was rumored to be a potential starter against the Houston Texans, it seems unlikely due to the lack of a miraculous recovery.
With a 3-6 record as the starting quarterback this season, Wilson’s arm talent and decision-making remain underdeveloped. While he possesses the ability to make impressive throws, his efficiency and consistency do not meet the standard expected of an NFL quarterback in his third season. The upcoming game against the Houston Texans holds significance for Wilson’s future with the Jets, especially amidst swirling trade rumors.
In their previous encounter in 2021, the Texans faced Wilson in a game that featured a memorable play known as the ‘back shovel.’ Despite Houston’s efforts, they lost 21-14 as Wilson threw for 145 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and added a rushing touchdown.
The Texans enter the matchup with a formidable defense, currently on a four-game interception streak. In the last four games, they have amassed a total of 11 interceptions, with seven occurring during this streak. The recent addition of Adrian Amos, a former member of the New York Jets, enhances their secondary. Amos is expected to contribute both as a rotational asset and a special teams ace in Houston.
Derek Stingley, a key player for the Texans, will play a crucial role in the game by guarding second-year wide receiver Garrett Wilson. Garrett Wilson leads the team with 745 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Stingley may receive assistance from veteran Jimmy Ward as they prioritize double coverage on the Jets’ most talented player.
The Jets’ offensive strategy involves playing with two or sometimes three tight ends, requiring the Texans’ linebackers to cover downfield and stop the run. If Houston can effectively neutralize both Wilsons (Garrett and Zach) and focus on limiting the impact of the tight ends, they stand a good chance of securing their eighth win of the season, marking their highest win total since 2019.
