Russell Martin: “back in the squad”
Saints manager Russell Martin assured that Will Smallbone’s recent injury shouldn’t result in an extended absence from the team.
The midfielder was absent from the squad in the 2-0 victory over Cardiff City, but Martin anticipates Smallbone’s return for the upcoming match against Watford.
Smallbone, 23, started in the 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town on November 25 and made a late appearance in the 1-0 win against Bristol City.
Martin explained that Smallbone withdrew from the Ireland squad due to a minor injury, played the Huddersfield game feeling confident, but the subsequent match set him back.
Despite attempting to be on the bench for the Bristol City game, Smallbone felt his performance would be compromised, leading to his absence.
Even in Smallbone’s absence, the Saints showcased a dominant performance, securing a 2-0 win against Cardiff City. Martin highlighted the impressive midfield trio of Shea Charles, Flynn Downes, and Stuart Armstrong.
Martin emphasized that Smallbone is granted time off to allow the injury to settle, considering the hectic Championship schedule.
He expressed optimism about Smallbone’s return, stating that the midfielder will likely be back in the squad after a week or ten days of rest.
