The Minnesota Vikings are approaching their bye week in Week 13, facing a two-game losing streak but still maintaining playoff aspirations. To enhance their postseason chances, the team must address their offensive struggles, particularly in the running game. Despite opting for Alexander Mattison over veteran Dalvin Cook in the offseason, the results have been disappointing. Mattison has accumulated 594 yards on 158 carries, averaging a lackluster 3.8 yards per attempt and registering three fumbles.
After 12 games, the Vikings (6-6) find themselves ranked 24th in the NFL for total rushing yards (1,105), 24th in yards per attempt (3.9), 26th in rushing touchdowns, and 29th in rushing yards per game (92.1). Remarkably, their rushing yardage per game has decreased from 2022, averaging only 95.7 yards compared to the previous season. Surprisingly, quarterback Joshua Dobbs, who joined the team at the trade deadline, leads the team in rushing touchdowns with three, while Mattison has yet to score.
The potential solution to the Vikings’ rushing challenges lies in backup running back Ty Chandler. The second-year player has demonstrated glimpses of promise, amassing 168 yards on 37 attempts with a rushing touchdown. Notably, Chandler has maintained a commendable average of 4.5 yards per attempt and has not fumbled. Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell praised Chandler as a “nice change-of-pace” back in October.
To revitalize the running game, it is suggested that Chandler be given more opportunities, particularly on first and second downs. Meanwhile, the heavier Mattison (5-foot-11, 215 pounds) could serve as an option on third downs and at the goal line. With uncertainties surrounding the quarterback position, as rookies Jaren Hall and journeyman Nick Mullens compete alongside struggling Dobbs, a reliable run game becomes paramount.
Given Mattison’s struggles as an every-down back, the Vikings stand to gain by entrusting Chandler with a more significant role in their offensive scheme, potentially turning the tide in their favor.
