Swindon Town manager Michael Flynn expressed a mix of relief and concern in his post-match interview following a League Two clash against Accrington Stanley. Despite Swindon being comfortably ahead 4-0 in the 90th minute, the game took a tense turn as Accrington launched a late comeback, resulting in a 4-3 final score.
Charlie Austin scored Swindon’s fourth goal in the 89th minute, seemingly securing victory. However, the team’s potential over-confidence almost proved costly. In the 92nd minute, Korede Adedoyin scored for Accrington, followed by two goals from Brad Hills in the 97th and 100th minute, making the victory far from convincing for Swindon.
While the team secured all three points, the match revealed cracks in focus and consistency within the side. Flynn, acknowledging the precarious situation, described it as the players “hitting the self-destruct button.” Despite dominating the game for 92 minutes, the last-minute lapse nearly allowed Accrington to equalize.
Flynn, visibly fatigued, commented on the unpredictable nature of football, stating, “Football does sometimes defy explanation.” He admitted that witnessing an equalizer in the final moments would have been typical of past games. Despite the team’s commendable performance for most of the match, the late stumble was a cause for concern.
The victory was crucial for Swindon as it marked their first three points on the road since August. Flynn acknowledged the positive aspects of the game, praising the team’s bravery, ball control, recovery runs, and overall performance for 90 minutes. However, he remained cautious, emphasizing that they “got away with it tonight,” but there might be instances where such mistakes could prove costly in the future.
Flynn concluded by underlining the need for the players to learn from this experience, stating, “So, we have to make sure that doesn’t happen again.” Despite the relief of securing a win, the manager emphasized the importance of avoiding similar late-game collapses in future matches to maintain consistency and ensure positive results.
