Ronnie O’Sullivan has advanced to the second round of the UK Championship with a 6-2 victory over Anthony McGill in York, marking the start of his quest for an eighth title in this event. O’Sullivan’s initial triumph in 1993 saw him defeat Stephen Hendry 10-6, and his most recent win in 2018 involved a 10-6 victory over Mark Allen.
Despite falling 2-0 behind against McGill, the 47-year-old rebounded by winning six consecutive frames, setting up a second-round encounter with either Robert Milkins or Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.
Post-match, O’Sullivan, speaking to the BBC, acknowledged the challenges of the lengthy matches at this stage of his career, emphasizing the importance of digging deep and out-battling opponents like Anthony McGill.
Reflecting on the 30th anniversary of his first UK title at the age of 17, O’Sullivan expressed a determination to continue playing as long as possible, considering each year as a bonus and appreciating his extended success after the age of 35.
In another veteran’s success, 48-year-old John Higgins secured his spot in the second round with a 6-3 victory over Joe O’Connor. Higgins will face either Neil Robertson or Zhou Yuelong in the next round.
Meanwhile, the defending champion, Mark Allen, was eliminated this year, losing 6-5 to Ding Junhui in a rematch of the 2022 final.
