Southampton is reportedly eyeing a move for Hartberg striker Maximilian Entrup, and football pundit Carlton Palmer sees this as a potentially beneficial acquisition for the club. According to information from Laola1, transmitted through TEAMtalk, Southampton deployed scouts to observe Entrup’s performance during an international friendly between Austria and Germany.
Entrup, who recently joined Hartberg after an impressive stint with Marchfield Donauauen, where he scored 32 goals in 38 games, has had a strong start at his new club. In 11 appearances this season, he has scored 11 goals and provided two assists. This noteworthy form earned him a call-up to the Austrian senior squad by manager Ralf Rangnick, culminating in his debut as a substitute in Austria’s 2-0 victory over Germany.
The speculation around Che Adams’ future at Southampton adds fuel to the transfer rumors. Adams, the subject of interest from various Premier League clubs, including Everton, Crystal Palace, and Wolverhampton Wanderers, remained at St Mary’s after Southampton’s relegation. However, as his contract nears expiration and discussions about a new three-year deal with vice-captaincy continue, Adams has not yet committed to an extension. The Saints face a dilemma, considering whether to sell him in January or risk losing him for free in the summer.
Southampton, currently occupying the fourth spot in the Championship table, is set to resume action against Huddersfield Town after the international break. Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Carlton Palmer expressed support for Southampton’s pursuit of Entrup, considering him a suitable replacement for Adams.
Palmer stated, “Southampton are looking for a possible replacement for Che Adams,” highlighting Adams’ reluctance to accept the offered three-year deal and vice-captaincy. Given Adams’ uncertain future, Palmer anticipates his departure from Southampton in January.
Entrup, with a notable record of eight goals in nine appearances, is seen as a promising Austrian talent and a potential successor to Adams. Southampton, currently on an eight-match unbeaten streak in the Championship, has already secured the services of Ross Stewart and Adam Armstrong but sees Entrup as a player with added quality to enhance their chances of securing a top-two spot in the league.
