The Houston Texans seem to be surpassing expectations in their rebuilding efforts, riding a three-game winning streak and poised to contend for the top spot in the AFC South. Currently standing at 6-4, a victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday would bring them level with the Jaguars at 7-3, securing the division lead due to a head-to-head tiebreaker. This marks a significant turnaround for the Texans, who endured an 11-38 record over the past three seasons.
Guided by rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud and first-year coach DeMeco Ryans, a former Houston linebacker, the Texans have discovered a winning formula. Stroud, the second overall pick in this year’s draft, has been instrumental in their recent success, amassing 1,162 passing yards and contributing nine total touchdowns during the winning streak. Despite four interceptions in the last game, Stroud’s mistakes didn’t rattle the improved Texans defense under Ryans.
Under Ryans’ leadership, the Texans’ defense has undergone a notable transformation, moving from 30th in total defense and 27th in scoring defense in the 2022 season to 19th and 14th, respectively. However, facing a formidable opponent in the Jaguars, who have won six of their past seven games, the Texans recognize the challenges ahead.
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence has been a driving force for the Jaguars, earning AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors after an impressive performance against the Tennessee Titans. Lawrence’s contributions, coupled with the return of receiver Zay Jones, who missed the previous four games due to injury and arrest, add depth to the Jaguars’ offensive capabilities.
Despite Jones being limited in Wednesday’s practice due to lingering knee issues, the Jaguars remain focused on the crucial matchup against the Texans.
Both teams acknowledge the significance of this game in the context of the division race. However, players like Jones emphasize a balanced perspective, respecting their opponent while maintaining confidence in their own abilities.
In terms of injuries, the Jaguars faced limitations with Jones, Roy Robertson-Harris (ankle), and Tyson Campbell (hamstring). On the Texans’ side, key players, including Will Anderson Jr., Noah Brown, and Laremy Tunsil, were absent from Wednesday’s practice, all dealing with knee injuries.
Safety Jimmie Ward (hamstring) also did not participate, and defensive end Dylan Horton announced his absence from the team due to a “personal health matter.” These factors add an additional layer of uncertainty leading up to the crucial matchup.
