In a hard-fought encounter, the Houston Texans managed to secure a 21-16 victory against the Arizona Cardinals, overcoming the challenges presented by rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud’s first game with multiple interceptions. The pivotal moment came as fellow 2023 first-round pick, Will Anderson, disrupted quarterback Kyler Murray, extinguishing the Cardinals’ last attempt at a comeback.
Anderson’s impactful play underscored the strategic move by the Texans to trade up in the 2023 NFL Draft, sacrificing fifth- and seventh-round picks to secure the third overall pick. This maneuver, coupled with their earlier selection of quarterback C.J. Stroud as the second overall pick, reflected the Texans’ commitment to building a foundation for first-year head coach DeMeco Ryans.
Recognizing the Cardinals’ need to rebuild around Murray or his successor for a full season due to Murray’s return from an ACL tear in November, Anderson became a crucial addition to the Texans’ roster.
During the game, Anderson demonstrated his potential with a sack, a game-sealing quarterback hit, and a pivotal tackle for loss. These defensive contributions proved vital as Stroud, though productive, faced an uncharacteristically error-prone day, marked by interceptions in the second and fourth quarters.
Stroud’s final stat line included 27 completions on 37 attempts, accumulating 336 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. Receiver Tank Dell played a significant role for the Texans, catching eight of 10 passes for 149 yards and contributing a touchdown.
On the other side, Murray, in his second game back from injury, completed 20-of-30 passes for 214 yards, securing a touchdown and recording an interception.
His trademark escapability added another dimension, as he rushed for 51 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.
With this hard-fought win, the Texans improved their record to 6-4, while the Cardinals faced a setback, falling to 2-9.
