Wolverhampton Wanderers’ star, Hwang Hee-chang, has shared his perspective on the penalty incident that resulted in Newcastle United being awarded a penalty kick after a foul on Fabian Schar at Molineux.
Referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the penalty spot late in the first half, deeming that Hwang had fouled Schar inside the Wolves’ penalty box. Despite protests from Wolves players and fans, a lengthy VAR check upheld Taylor’s decision.
Callum Wilson successfully converted the penalty to double his goal tally for the night, giving Eddie Howe’s team a 2-1 lead after he had previously opened the scoring. Wolves managed to level the score thanks to Mario Lemina’s header before Wilson put Newcastle ahead.
Fortunately, Hwang became the hero for Gary O’Neil’s side, scoring an impressive solo goal. He evaded Dan Burn and slotted the ball past Nick Pope from close range.
After the game, Hwang, who is Wolves’ top scorer with six league goals, was asked about his thoughts on the penalty incident. He told Sky Sports, “It’s difficult to say… maybe I thought I hadn’t touched anything. If anything, I kicked the floor. I smashed the ball, but he went to block, and I stopped, but the referee gave it as a penalty. After the first half, my teammates were still telling me to trust myself, but I wanted to try and contribute to my team, and I was delighted to score again.”
