The club has not yet engaged in discussions about a new contract with Armstrong, potentially risking his departure as a free agent in the summer when his current deal concludes.
Armstrong, a key player for Southampton, was part of the team that faced relegation from the Premier League last season. The club is now focused on regaining promotion to the top flight.
According to Martin, there have been no talks about renewing Armstrong’s contract at this point. The player’s primary focus is on playing football, as he has had a challenging and unenjoyable 18 to 24 months, as Martin acknowledged. For the long-term future, Armstrong appears committed to concentrating on his day-to-day performance with the team, and the resolution of his contract will likely follow suit.
Armstrong’s future at Southampton will likely be influenced by the division the club competes in next season. He brings valuable experience to the squad, having earned 44 caps for the Scottish national team, and he contributes quality to Southampton’s ranks. Since joining the club in 2018, he has made 182 appearances and scored 21 goals, including two in the current campaign.
Before his move to England, Armstrong made a name for himself in the Scottish Premiership with stints at Dundee United and Celtic, where he won four league titles, as well as the Scottish Cup and League Cup.
Southampton recently secured a 2-1 victory against Hull City, thanks to a late goal from Ryan Fraser. They are currently in 8th place in the standings, just outside the playoff positions based on goal difference. The team is set to play against Preston North End in their upcoming fixture.
