Former Premier League striker Patrick Cutrone, who commanded a £16 million transfer fee when he joined Wolves, is now relishing life in Italy’s second division after departing Molineux to embark on a fresh journey with Como 1907.
During his time wearing AC Milan’s iconic number nine shirt and securing a £16 million transfer to one of the Premier League’s most ambitious and upwardly mobile teams in 2019, Cutrone probably never anticipated preparing for a match against Catanzaro in Italy’s Serie B just four years later. Nonetheless, this is the reality for a striker who has had to rebuild his career from the ground up after a disappointing stint at Wolves dealt a significant blow to his once-promising reputation.
Cutrone had a lackluster spell at Wolves, scoring just three goals in 28 appearances for the club. He also struggled to make a mark during loan spells at Fiorentina, Valencia, and Empoli. In the summer of 2022, when his hometown club Como came calling, he decided to leave Wolverhampton Wanderers on a permanent basis.
“After experiencing various loan spells, I needed serenity, especially mentally,” Cutrone told Tuttomercatoweb, explaining his decision. “I opted to leave but to be happy. I received offers from top leagues, but I consciously chose Como because I found a solid and long-term project here. It’s a decision I would make again. I’m genuinely content and cherish my stay at the Molineux for the love, care, and attention I got.”
Cutrone’s debut season at Como in 2022/23 yielded a respectable nine goals. With his new club currently sitting sixth and pushing for a place in the play-offs, he’s optimistic that better days are ahead.
“Those who had played in Serie B had warned me that it was a tough and physically demanding league, and I also experienced it firsthand,” added Cutrone, who hails from Lombardy. “However, thanks to my teammates and the club’s support, I integrated quickly. Last year wasn’t bad, even on a personal level. This year, we’ve had an even better start, so we need to keep going. Like all forwards, I aim to score as many goals as possible. I have personal goals tied to my development, and I hope to achieve them. Nevertheless, the primary objective is to assist the team in pursuing our shared goals over time.”
Cutrone has found the back of the net three times in his first nine Serie B appearances this season.
