Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, and Micah Richards, all pundits, share the opinion that Liverpool midfielder Ibrahima Konate should face suspension before the upcoming match against Nottingham Forest.
In the recent Merseyside derby, Konate committed two fouls in the second half, which many believe should have resulted in yellow cards. However, Konate remained on the pitch, while Everton’s Ashley Young received two bookings and was sent off.
If Konate had been sent off in the Merseyside derby, he would have been ineligible to play in the Liverpool vs. Forest match at Anfield scheduled for the following Sunday. This decision has stirred controversy among fans and pundits, with the three pundits expressing their views on the matter.
During The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker remarked, “The game’s narrative was about numerous yellow cards, the incorrect player being sent off, and another player not receiving a card for very similar infractions.”
Shearer concurred, stating, “Yes, Konate was extremely lucky, and on any other day, a different referee would have shown him a second yellow card, resulting in his ejection. Ashley Young received two yellow cards as he should have; it was a reckless challenge when he was already on a yellow card. If the referee is making that decision, he should have also given Konate a second yellow card because he clearly took out the opponent.”
Richards also agreed that “the referee made an incorrect call” regarding the cards issued and went on to commend Everton for their performance, especially in the midfield.
